Before we Begin…
I just want to shoutout my fellow moms. You work at home moms. You work from home moms. You working moms. You moms. You’re the real MVPs because it doesn’t matter what you’re doing… you’re doing something. You are always on. On the good days. On the tough days. You’re on. And you’re amazing.
This week has been a rough one and it's only Monday! Baby is in the "I want everything you're doing phase" and nothing less than exactly what I'm doing will suffice or it is total meltdown. It's a hard balance between slowing down and offering what I have as well as pushing onward and completing the task at hand all while consoling her and teaching her. #parenting #momlife
Getting Started with Sandwich Bread
I feel so incredibly unoriginal mentioning how much healthier and much less expensive homemade bread is. Truly. I feel so ordinary... I feel like any other blogger out there living a more home made life when I talk about such things. You're here because you already know this, right? Right... so let's move on!
Sandwich Bread Recipe Prep
First, I like to collect all my ingredients. Because me, being me, will inevitably forget something. Like that one time I forgot to add salt. And by that one time, I mean those several times. And let me tell you. Saltless bread is inedible bread. Seriously. It’s that bad.
Although a youtube commenter did mention making seasoned crutons out of unsalted bread and I thought that was an interesting idea!
All that to say, I'm learning to live more slowly and intentionally. So I’ve learned to enjoy the process of prepping. A simple stack of glass nesting bowls brings me joy and helps me live out my Food Network dreams. Bonus - it's really hard to miss and ingredient when you have them all laid out. Extra bonus - it makes it more fun
For this sandwich bread recipe, you will need:
- 3 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons yeast (instant or dry active - dry active just needs time to bloom)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 heaping teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 3 tablespoons unsalted softened butter
Sandwich Bread Recipe Instructions
Next, combine all dry ingredients in a stand mixer with dough hook attachment. If you don’t have a stand mixer, do it by hand! So much fun for little ones to get involved here.
Then, add wet ingredients to dry. Slowly. Speed actually does make a difference here so don’t rush. If you find your dough is not coming together, just add a dash more water until it does. (different flours absorb differently and different climates can affect absorption too. I tend to need a little more liquid when baking in arid southern california)
Knead for a few minutes until dough is smooth. Then add butter slowly.
Knead again for a few minutes or until smooth, scraping down sides of bowl as needed.
Once silky, cover and
let rise for one hour.
After one hour, remove dough onto floured work surface and degas dough by rolling out with rolling pin. No need to make a giant work of art, in fact, it will help to keep this as wide as the loaf pan.
Roll dough up and place into greased loaf pan and let rise 30 minutes or until doubles in size.
Place loaf pan in a 350*F oven for about 35 minutes. The loaf should be a very caramel color on all sides.
Once baked, remove from pan and cool on wire rack.
Enjoy with butter and jam, for BLTA’s or any other thing your heart desires! This bread recipe is a part of our weekly rhythms here and we often eat this as toast with soup I make from our beloved meat broth.
I hope you enjoy this recipe.
