Guys. Chalk paint is LIFE. Here’s why I love chalk paint:
-
You can chalk paint just about anything…. (pictured here to the left is an old utensil holder, it was black, now it’s white. Thank you, chalk paint!)
-
You don’t have to prime when you use chalk paint
-
You don’t have to sand when you use chalk paint
-
Chalk paint spreads so easily making it easy on the arms
-
Chalk paint spreads easily and COVERS so well, making it not just beautiful and functional but hugely FRUGAL
-
And perhaps, best of all, it’s easy to get that shabby chic, rustic, farmhouse look with chalk paint
As as avid DIY’er, I’ve been making chalk paint for years. My mom first introduced me to this recipe and it’s the best out there.
Here is a chair I refurbished for our wedding with chalk paint
And bonus, you can make chalk paint for pennies, especially when you use some “oops” paint from your local home improvement or hardware store.

I even used DIY chalk paint on my kitchen utensil holder
I used that same oops paint chalk paint combo on our keys rack:

Here’s what I recommend using: a cheapp-o chip brush (usually less than $1) to paint with and an old bowl to hold your ingredients.
DIY CHALK PAINT RECIPE (makes enough to cover about two dining chairs… super exact measuring here, you like that?! ha!):
-
2 TBSP Plaster of Paris
-
1 TBSP water
-
1 C paint
Mix the Palster of Paris and water until it’s about the consistency of frothy milk or light mayo. Mix in the paint until it’s all thorroughly combined, and you’re ready to go!
Happy painting and DIY’ing, friend!
